Visual and Performing Arts in a classroom can help students learn about their cultures and help them with personal development. Working at an Elementary classroom I’ve sees how art, theater, and dance has been useful to students. Many shy students learn to express themselves through one of these mediums and begin developing an identity. Meanwhile, other students learn to channel certain behaviors and turn them into a creative dance, play, or musical. As a future educator, I will try to incorporate visual and performing arts in many of my lessons because I have seen how successful art has been when working with elementary students.
After reading the framework I need to be knowledgeable in music and movement in order to teach visual and performing arts in an elementary classroom. Many of the sections of the framework involved having student’s explore dance through music. The framework also wants teachers to help students understand the relationship between music and dance. Developing a lesson plan involving both dance and music will help students become aware of personal space, learn to work in groups, and use their senses to observe the world. My classes at CSUDH have prepared me to teach VPA in an elementary course in numerous ways. Taking Dance 440 taught me how to incorporate dance in different lessons throughout the day. For example, during ELA I can create a story with the students that involve different types of moments like making big steps, small steps, and axial movements. My art classes have also prepared me to teach VPA in an elementary classroom by helping me realize that we all work at different levels and that art comes in many forms. I also learned that art allows students to express their fears, joy, and other emotions that can be useful when we have behavioral issues within a classroom.
My coursework at CSUDH and my fieldwork experience has helped me feel prepare to teach visual and performing arts in an elementary classroom but I also have so difficulties in other areas. I feel that I can help students connect art to their lives especially since my minor focuses on art. I’ve taken several art courses that have taught me the history of art and how art evolved over different time periods. Through my painting and ceramics classes I learned how to effectively teach students how to do art without interfering with their personal styles. An area that I feel less prepared in is creating dance movements in response to music. I am very shy so knowing that I would have to go in front of the class and create a dance routine for my students would be very difficult for me. Learning to overcome my shyness will help me show students that dance does not have to be perfected. Like art dance comes in multiple forms and everyone has their unique styles. I know that by gaining more hands on experience I will be able to perfect lessons involving visual and performing arts.
For VPA I have several artifacts including different paintings, drawings, and ceramic pieces that I have created over the past four years. I also have dance lessons and stories that I created in dance 440 to get students moving and allow them to explore their imagination. My work demonstrated my knowledge of VPA because it is work that I’ve done as a student at CSUDH. My work will show students that art comes in multiple forms through dance, music, and art. It also shows them that we should never compare our work to anyone else’s because we all have unique styles that we explore through different mediums.
Purpose of Physical Education
The purpose of physical education in schools is to improve the quality of life of our students and their over well-being. Most importantly, research has shown that kids that are more active have longer life expectancies. Obesity has become a chronic disease that often leads to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Our belief is that providing students with 45 minutes of physical education will reduce any of the chronic diseases that follow obesity. We want our students to prevent sedentary life styles and instead encourage them to be physically active. Furthermore, with your help we can ensure that these children will learn self-control and gain a positive life style.
In order to teach PE in elementary classroom teachers should know that level of coordination and flexibility of their students. The framework outlines how younger students are the less coordinated because they are still developing. We must also realize that younger students have shorter attentions spans. Therefore, teaching a whole lesson on how to play football might not be the best choice when working with grades 1-2. However, as we get to the upper grades we can start incorporating rules and principals of how to play a certain sport. My KIN 425 class has prepared me to teach PE in a classroom. For this classroom we had a lecture and a lab. For the lecture we learned about calories, how students can become fit, and how important fitness is in education. For the lab we would go into the gym where we would work in groups to create lesson plans to teach the class. The professor would give us feedback and tell us how to improve the lesson or how to shape it more for younger grade levels. Aside from my courses at CSUDH my fieldwork has also helped me teach students to be active. At my job I have to work with a group of children for psychomotor. During these 15 minutes the students learn to stretch their muscles and learn different workout routines. Once we are done we go on to the activity of the day such as basketball, soccer, or handball. These experiences have helped me feel prepared in teaching children how to be physically active and find different activities that they might not have every tried. However, I feel less prepared in naming all the different muscles we have in the human body. Reading the framework I learned that children are curious about the human body so trying to incorporate the human body in a lesson seems difficult. I know that with time this will change and I will get the experience I need to incorporate physical education in any lesson.
For physical education I have lesson plans that I created to teach students how to use a parachute or play football. The lesson plan is about 15-20 minutes. My work samples demonstrate my understanding of learning physical education because it allows me to see that different grade level master various levels of physical development. My parachute activity is meant for 1-2nd grade students but can be modified to work with older children. Also I have signs created for a four corner activity where students move clockwise through four different activities to master a concepts long and I have notes to go with different activities. My work samples demonstrate my understanding of my learning of physical education because the courses I took at CSUDH are designed to help future educators. These courses allowed me to see that different grade levels master various skill performances. My parachute activity is meant for 1-2nd grade students but can be modified to work with older children. As a result, I feel that physical education should be incorporated in classrooms because it is sometimes the only way we can get students moving. In order to get students active I will try to create lessons plans around physical education to make learning fun.
